Eid al-Adha 2026 in Morocco: everything you need to know
Eid al-Adha (عيد الأضحى), known in Morocco as l'Aïd el-Kbir (the Great Feast), commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar.
Eid al-Adha traditions in Morocco
- Eid prayer: morning congregation prayer in mosques and open-air spaces
- Sheep sacrifice: each family traditionally slaughters a sheep (or shares the cost)
- Meat distribution: one-third for the family, one-third for neighbours, one-third for the poor
- Traditional dishes: boulfaf (grilled liver), mechoui, lamb couscous
Practical impact: public holidays and daily life
Eid al-Adha is an official 2-day public holiday in Morocco under the Labour Code. All government offices, banks, and most businesses are closed. Transport is very busy the day before (families travelling home).
Sheep prices in 2026
Sheep prices typically range from 1,500 to 5,000 MAD depending on the breed, weight and region. Livestock markets open 2-3 weeks before Eid. Prices spike in the final 10 days — buying early is advisable.
